Fall Prevention at Home: The Complete Room-by-Room Guide

One in four Americans over 65 falls each year. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries in older adults. The good news: the majority of falls happen at home, and most are preventable with targeted modifications that don't require a contractor.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1

Start with the bathroom — the highest-risk room

Install grab bars next to the toilet and inside the shower or tub. Add non-slip mats inside the tub and on the bathroom floor. Consider a raised toilet seat if rising from the toilet is difficult. These three changes alone prevent a significant proportion of home falls.

  2. 2

Clear walking paths throughout the home

Remove throw rugs, which are a leading trip hazard. Secure loose carpet edges with tape or tacks. Move electrical cords away from walking paths. Rearrange furniture to create clear, wide paths between rooms.

  3. 3

    Improve lighting in every room

Many falls happen at night when seniors get up for the bathroom. Install night lights in hallways, the bathroom, and the bedroom. Make sure light switches are accessible from the bed. Consider motion-activated lights for the most-traveled paths.

  4. 4

    Address the stairs

Install handrails on both sides of every staircase. Make sure the handrails are secure and extend the full length of the stairs. Add non-slip treads to each step. If stairs are a significant challenge, consider whether a stair lift is appropriate.

  5. 5

Set up a medical alert system

Even with every precaution, falls can still happen. A medical alert device means your parent can call for help immediately if they fall and can't get up. This is especially important for seniors who live alone or spend time alone during the day.

Caregiver tip

Ask your parent's doctor for a referral to a physical therapist for a fall risk assessment. PT can identify specific balance and strength issues and prescribe targeted exercises that reduce fall risk by up to 30%.
